#66 — Boom
The complexity is mind-boggling.
- Joy Division artwork? Tony Wilson mosaic? Menus made out of bits of Hacienda sign? Or … how about some decent restaurants? On the theme parkification of Manchester.
- Simon Sinek on intensity versus consistency. Wise, wise words, plus fab animation by Jocie Juritz.
- Axonometric illustrations of London tube stations. We take these for granted so much, but when you look at them in a different way, the complexity is mind-boggling. How does one even go about designing underground?
- In search of lost time in Europe’s sanatoriums. Like strange, beautiful colonies on distant planets.
- This Eye/Anne Miltenburg interview with book design legend Irma Boom from 2014 is well worth revisiting. I just wish I could afford any of her books.
- Present & Correct’s Old Books We Saw At Markets But Didn’t Always Buy is a wonderful resource of mostly non-English mid-century graphic design.
- Disney’s script to screen videos are excellent little lessons in the art of screenwriting. The Anton Ego speech from Ratatouille – arguably one of the best films about design – is particularly good.
- Ralph Steadman visits Disneyland.
- Have you see Lady Bird yet? Why not? If you have, you’ll almost certainly want Girls On Tops’ Greta Gerwig tee.
- The second season of Legion is almost upon us. Very excited – the first season managed to blend the usual Marvel comics nonsense with some of the most experimental television this side of Twin Peaks. And it was FUN.
- Print Stuff is returning to York next month. Well worth a visit if you want to spend lots of money on lovely printed loveliness.
- WAR. What is it good for? Illustration.
That is all.
