Meanwhile #061
All about making words and pictures fit into a rectangle.
This is an old edition of Meanwhile from an inferior, more simian newsletter platform that has unhelpfully severed all the hyperlinks. It’s included here in the archive simply for sake of completeness.
Lecture in Progress. LiP asked me a bunch of questions about work, education and inspiration. In summary: "I guess it’s all about making words and pictures fit into a rectangle, isn’t it?"
Paper Architecture. Geoff Manaugh on Elon Musk's Hyperloop and other fantastical visions of the future that never leave the drawing board (or shouldn't have – such as Dubai's "meaningless mess of super-projects").
Corners. The Khlong Toei district in Bangkok is now home to four irregularly shaped football pitches, located in the unused spaces between apartment buildings and back alleys. Regular rules apply, but it's fascinating to see how the peculiarities of each pitch inform how the game is played.
Cheesy Bugs. Moose Allain explores the many, many names we have for woodlice. His theory: "they're fascinating to children who also eat them, hence the many food names". A nice little reminder that language is mostly bonkers.
Obligatory Typewriter Link. Keira Rathbone draws with a typewriter. Intrigued by how this technique has changed the way she sees the world. Probably like an analogue version of The Matrix or something.
A Ghost Storey. Rooney Mara is selling her LA home. You can't afford it, but it's worth checking out the pics anyway – the Scandi-mini interior is gorgeous. I bet she's never even set foot in it.
Cowboys May Vary. A look at Peter Byrne's This Land exhibition at Colours May Vary in Leeds. Awfully proud to have had a hand in designing Peter's book.
That is all.
